We are hiring!

Seeking a dynamic publicist (part-time; contract)

The Position

Between the Lines is looking for a publicist to manage the publicity for our current titles, as well as the overall publicity profile of our small press. This is a part-time position (approximately 2 days per week).

You will be responsible for a number of tasks, including but not limited to:

* Planning and reporting, including developing promotion & budgeting plans in conjunction with other staff, and summarizing publicity activities at various meetings

* Title-specific publicity activities, including maintaining media lists, organizing media outreach, catalogue and review copy mail outs, with a view to garnering as much media as possible for BTL titles, and creating engaging and effective press kits and publicity materials

* Event organization and support, including identifying conference or public speaking opportunities for authors, planning all logistics around book launches and other author events, and providing support and networking at trade shows (Word on the Street, OLA, Congress of the Humanities), as appropriate

* General branding, reader development, and social media, through newsletters, website and Facebook updates, and developing other social media

The Person

We are seeking a dynamic individual who will be an excellent addition to our small team. Although previous media and event planning experience is strongly recommended, it is not required; however, strong writing skills, comfort with social media, and with the content of the books that we publish is mandatory. Our ideal candidate will have relevant experience in activism, politics, academia, labour, or organizing, and will have either access to strong networks or the acumen and ability to create and tap into them. We would like to work with someone who shares our enthusiasm for the progressive non-fiction we publish. The ideal candidate will be organized, diplomatic and cooperative, able to work with a range of personalities and stakeholders, including authors, media contacts, and board and staff members.

The Company

Established in 1977, Between the Lines publishes non-fiction books that support social change and justice, written by some of Canada's leading political and cultural thinkers. Our small cooperative office is comprised of a handful of committed staff and a committed advisory board of academics, activists, writers, and publishing types.

You’ll be working alongside us in a flexible, non-traditional workspace – an open concept office located in the fabulous 401 Richmond community of artists, non-profits, and more. Exactly what this part-time position will look like in terms of logistics will be up to you and to us: we want to work with you to make this opportunity work.
