guidelines for manuscript submission

Between the Lines publishes non-fiction books in the following subject areas: politics and public policy issues, social issues, development studies, history, education, the environment, health, gender and sexuality, labour, technology, media, and culture. Please note that we do not publish fiction or poetry.

We prefer to receive proposals, rather than entire manuscripts, for consideration. An initial package should contain the following:

  • a covering letter stating your primary intent in writing the work, and your sense of its potential market, i.e. who would want to buy this book, and why?;

  • an outline of the whole manuscript--either its Table of Contents, if sufficiently detailed, or a schematic summary;

  • a sample of your writing, ideally the introductory chapter and one other representative chapter;

  • your résumé.

Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If you would like your material to be returned, be sure to include enough postage and a sufficiently large envelope.

Please address all materials to:
